Pensions

Why Pensions?

The pensions industry is extremely dynamic and is rarely out of the headlines. The role of the pensions actuary has had to adapt rapidly to keep up with the changing landscape. With well-documented increases to life expectancy, record low interest rates, and frequent Government policy changes, the industry is a compelling place to work.

Actuaries are among the most influential professionals in the financial world and design solutions to problems that involve financial risk or future uncertainty.

By being involved in an industry that never stands still, you will find yourself continually learning and facing new challenges. As a graduate pensions actuary, you will have exposure to a wide range of work that will be both engaging and rewarding.

We provide services to pension schemes of all different sizes, which requires our advice to be tailored to clients with different needs and opportunities. In joining XPS, you will develop a broad experience of the industry as well as develop your analytical and communication skills.

We are a growing business looking to use technology and innovative thinking to ensure our clients receive the highest quality advice that we can be proud of.

Tom Birkin  - Pensions

I thoroughly enjoy my role here at XPS. It’s a bit of a cliché, but I can honestly say no two days here are the same! In the 3 years I have been here I have had the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of tasks and projects for many different clients. These include scheme valuations, actuarial factor reviews and corporate accounting disclosures as well as a variety of individual member calculations such as early retirement quotes and redundancy calculations.  I particularly enjoy the variety of work and the relatively high level of responsibility given my junior status at the company. The opportunity to work closely with expert colleagues on important and high-level projects is one that I have relished.

As a university graduate starting out, I found the actuarial role to be both challenging and rewarding - there is a steep learning curve with a lot of new concepts and techniques to pick up when you first start. Asking loads of questions and letting colleagues know when I don’t understand something has therefore been key to my development. Colleagues are always more than happy to take the time to answer my many questions with a smile on their face which has been a huge help. I am part of a fantastic team of consultants who are all willing to go the extra mile for their clients, their colleagues and the business as a whole.

The culture here at XPS is very inclusive and diverse. XPS is a ‘responsible’ business, committed to managing the business in an ethical and responsible way that our clients, us as employees and our society as a whole expect and deserve. The management team are always very open and willing to listen to new thoughts and ideas. There is a real focus on delivering excellent service, balanced with doing the right thing both for our clients and colleagues.

Outside of the workplace, the social aspect of XPS is awesome. As well as the ritual of post-work drinks on a Friday, there is an office social committee who organise a wide range of subsidised events from sports tournaments to pub quizzes and cocktail-making classes. With a different event almost every month, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Being a northern lad making the move down south, the people here at XPS have really helped me to settle in quickly and it feels like I’ve been part of the team for years.

For me, XPS is the ideal company to work for. I work with great people and there are lots of opportunities to grow and take on more responsibility. The company is very transparent and my managers are very open to discussing career progression and new opportunities. Our goal as a business is to shape and support pension schemes for the benefit of society. As an individual, I am inspired that we can make a real difference for scheme members, providing them with better financial outcomes and doing the right thing. However, I am also proud to be part of a fantastic team, dedicated to our roles in helping each other to deliver excellent service, whilst having fun at the same time!

Some quotes from our recent graduates about what they like most about XPS Investment:

“It’s the people that make working at XPS so great. I know exactly what to do to progress in my career and I know that I’ll be fully supported along the way.”

“The study package with XPS Pensions Group is excellent. It’s flexible and allows you to manage your time effectively and enable you to progress at your own pace through the exams.”

“I accepted the XPS job offer mostly because of the XPS staff I met at the assessment centre. They were able to give me an insight into everyday working life, the general atmosphere of the office, the study and training support. Most importantly, they all seemed really happy which I think is a good indicator of how a company treats its staff.”

“XPS is large enough that there is a wealth of different avenues you can explore, but the business is still small enough that you can feel like you’re an important part of the business and make an impact.”

“I’ve been constantly developing since I joined.”

“There a strong culture of making sure staff get the work/life balance they are after.”

“One of the things about this role is the variety of work we get. Because we’re a Pensions Consultancy we get a good mix of not just technical and mathematical work, but also reporting and presentational work.”
