Application timeline

  • Applications open Friday 27th September 2019
  • Applications close Friday 8th November 2019
  • Telephone interviews take place between Monday 21st October and Friday 15th November 2019

Complete the form accurately and carefully. We want to know more about you, your qualifications and any work experience you may have had. We also want to know why you are considering an actuarial career in either investment or pensions. If successful you will be invited to a telephone interview.

The telephone interview is an opportunity for us to get to know each other a little better and find out more about your skills and experience. Typically, there will be some competency questions as well as exploring your motivations further. If successful, we will invite you to attend an Assessment Day (for pensions) or a face-to-face interview (for investment).

Invites for assessment days and face-to-face interviews will be sent out in week commencing Monday 11th November 2019.

Assessment day (Pensions)

We are holding three assessment days to cover recruiting for all locations for our Pensions graduates:

  • Thursday 21st November 2019 (Leeds)
  • Wednesday 27th November 2019 (Reading)
  • Wednesday 4th December 2019 (Reading)

If you have applied for the pensions stream, you will be asked to attend an Assessment Day. Assessment Day is very much a two-way process. It is an opportunity for us to find out even more about you but also for you to decide if we are the right company for you.

The Assessment Day will last a whole day and you will take part in various exercises designed to allow you to demonstrate a range of skills and competencies. It will include a range of individual, small group and larger group tasks, and will likely include a presentation, data analysis exercises and an interview. There will also be the opportunity for you to meet our current students in a more informal session, some of whom will have gone through a similar process in previous years.

XPS will cover all reasonable travel expenses where required for attending either an Assessment Day or a face-to-face interview. Further information will also be provided where appropriate.

Face-to-face interview (Investment)

We are holding interviews between Monday 18th November and Friday 6th December 2019 in various local office locations for our Investment graduates.

If you have applied for the investment stream, you will be asked to attend a face-to-face interview. You will have a face-to-face interview with a small panel, consisting of members of the investment team, complete a couple of analysis tasks and deliver a pre-prepared presentation (details provided to you in advance of the interview). There will also be the opportunity to have a short tour of the office. This process will last between 21/2 and 3 hours.

XPS will cover all reasonable travel expenses where required for attending either an Assessment Day or a face-to-face interview. Further information will also be provided where appropriate.

Job offer or feedback

We will contact all candidates to provide both results and feedback either by phone or by email as appropriate.

Hints and tips

  • Give yourself plenty of time to complete the application and prepare your answers. We don’t anticipate that it should take you longer than an hour but note you can save your application form and return to it at any time before the application deadline to complete it.
  • Double-check your spelling and grammar and try to avoid jargon or ‘text’ speak. We pride ourselves on providing a professional service to our clients – quality and attention to detail are extremely important to us.
  • Tailor your application to us. We’re really passionate about working at XPS and want to employ people who believe in our business as much as we do.
  • When answering competency questions, remember to personalise them and bring out what you personally did in that situation. If you talk in generic terms such as “we did this”, we won’t get to find out about you and the contribution you could make to XPS.
  • Make sure you are in a quiet place to receive the call, ideally on a landline.
  • Be prepared – have your application form and CV to hand so you can refer to them if necessary, and make sure you’ve thought about what you want to get out of the interview personal.
  • Also, have some questions for your interviewer!
  • Remember that help and guidance are available from your University Careers Team, your University peers or the XPS Graduate Recruitment Team – although we won’t be able to divulge exact details of the exercises prior to the day!
  • We appreciate an Assessment Day or face-to-face interview with a small panel can be daunting. Remember to be yourself on the day and have fun!
  • This is a two-way process – it is an opportunity for us to find out all about you, but also for you to decide if we are the right company for you.
