Markets fare well against a largely negative backdrop

Against a backdrop of economic growth concerns and political uncertainty, financial markets continued their strong start to the year over March.

Disappointing economic data from the US, China and Europe led to a more supportive tone from both the Federal Reserve (Fed) and the European Central Bank (ECB). The Fed stepped away from its plan to continue raising interest rates this year, whilst the ECB revived the crisis-era stimulus programme that they had been in the process of weening the Eurozone off over the last two years.
